Date & Time: December 8, 1998 0430 UT Seeing: 4 <1-10 Seeing Scale (10 best)> Location of site: Madison, WI (Lat 43.07, Long 89.38, Elev. 500 ft) Site classification: Suburban Sky darkness: 4.0-4.3 <Limiting magnitude> Telescope: 6" Maksutov Magnification: 95x |
This is a pale
blue star with a dimmer companion and is situated 3/4 of a degree south
of the fine yellow-orange star 29 Ori. Situated just to the northeast
In
the same field (95x, 0.7 degree FOV) are four nearly evenly spaced stars forming a line that almost points at Struve 701. I could not split the double star located about 1/3 degree north of 701. It is a cold (24 degrees F) evening with haze increasing toward the horizon and a rising 3/4 moon.

With a white-pale
orange coloration, this double is very easy split pair, main white, 2nd
component pale orange. Clear contrast color.
Beautiful system to look at.

Location of site: Northern Kansas City, Missouri (USA) 94d 30m west longitude, 39d 15m north latitude 980 ft above Mean Sea Level Date of observations (UT): Dec 29, 1999 (0200 to 0400 UT) Site classification: suburban Sky conditions: seeing-- began at 8 out of 10, degraded to 6 by 0400 UT transparency-- 8 out of 10 limiting visual magnitude—4.5 Temperature: began at 40F, dropped to 26F by 0400; no wind at first, but a breeze picked up slightly as a front passed by about 0330 UT Telescope: Celestron C-8 Eyepiece: Celestron Micro-Guide (160x), 2.48x Barlow (400x effective magnification) |
This pair was
also measured with the Micro-Guide and the Barlow. The average was 6.5"
at a PA of 140, in close agreement with the 1933 measures of 6" at 140.
I am convinced that for pairs that are at least 4" apart, the MicroGuide
is a viable tool, and much less expensive than a filar micrometer.
I noted colors of white (B8 spectrum) and orange. The Tycho satellite suggests a distance of 493 light years, implying a luminosity of 92 Suns (77 and 15 respectively). The field in this area is particularly rich.

discernible at 50x. White primary, with grey/red colour for the secondary
which was seen to the SE of the primary.

Struve 701, h2268, and as a bonus, Struve 692 (about 50' NW of å 701). Struve 701, I had observed before and gave it a"!" , was resolved at 90x but better at 120x. Struve 692 makes a pretty appearance at 40x and is reminiscent of Otto Struve 55.

A bit difficult to find due to the poor 6x30 finder and mag. 4 skies. At 50x an “eight figure” is observed, but the pair is splitted at 81x and 119x. Best viewed at 203x (as shown in the picture). Is an easy pair for a C8 even in light polluted skies. However I don’t think it is a striking pair.
