Star:  S,h 49 [OSS 58, South-Herschel 49; ADS 3579; SAO 94240]
Location of site: Northern Kansas City, Missouri (USA)
94d 30m west longitude, 39d 15m north latitude
980 ft above Mean Sea Level
Date of observations (UT): Dec 29, 1999 (0200 to 0400 UT)
Site classification: suburban
Sky conditions
seeing-- began at 8 out of 10, degraded to 6 by 0400 UT
transparency-- 8 out of 10
limiting visual magnitude—4.5
Temperature: began at 40F, dropped to 26F by 0400; no wind at first,
but a breeze picked up slightly as a front passed by about 0330 UT
Telescope: Celestron C-8
Eyepiece: Celestron Micro-Guide (160x), 2.48x Barlow (400x effective
magnification)
I measured this triple with the Micro-Guide and got averages of AB 40" in PA 300 and AC 56" in PA 85.  (Compare to the 1972 measures of 39" at 305 and 54" at 88.)

There was also a D component, of magnitude 10.4, just measurable with the Micro-Guide, and I found it to be 132" away from A in PA 92.

I noted colors of White (B7V), pale blue (B6V), deep blue, and ???.

This pair may be 670 light years away.  If so, the system is about as bright as 169 Suns.

Star: S,h 49
Date of Observation: 23/1/00 9:30UT
Location of Observation: Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca, Spain
40º 36' N, 6º 32'W, Elev. 800 Meters
Seeing: 4 (1 - 10, 10 best)

Instrument: TeleVue 101 Apo refractor
Magnification: 60x, 114x
Separation (Clear or Touching): Clear.
Magnitude Comment: Magnitudes seemed to be in agreement with listed values.
Color Comment: The two brighter components are pale blue with the outer dimmer component somewhat yellowish.

General Comment: At 60X I had to use averted vision to see the dimmer third component but at 114X all three were clearly visible. The three components were more or less in a horizontal line. It was great to split the first multiple star as part of the 33-doubles group.

Star: S,h 49
Date & Time: 11/02/2000, 10:30 UTC
Seeing: 6
Location:  West Melton, New Zealand 43S.
Instrument: C102HD f/10 refractor
Sky darkness: 6   <Limiting magnitude> Didn't actually make a definitive measure but the sky was dark and the transparency really good.
Magnification: 50x
Relatively easy to track down, though made difficult due to a low haze and light cloud to the west. By this time the moon was close to setting but obscured. This triple was relatively easy, with a bright blue white primary, with a white secondary and a faint reddish looking tertiary.

However cloud came over the star making estimating the colour of the
tertiary just about impossible.

On the plus side, had a aurora to the south, which though not bright had some nice rays in it.
