Date & Time: 2001/01/10 21.45 + 10 UT Seeing: -- <1-10 Seeing Scale (10 best)> Location of site: Sydney, Australia Site classification: Suburban Conditions: Clear, crisp, little moisture in air. Temperature: 19C Sky darkness: -- <Limiting magnitude> Telescope: Celestron Star hopper 8” Dob Magnification: 50x, 75x, 104x |
Unsighted at 50x – 75x gave hint of companion. 104x gave
good clear split although Delta was showing an extreme disk due to atmosphere.
Thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of this double – with a difficulty
rating of 83.5 I was pleased at the scopes performance given the star was
still within 15 degrees of local horizon. I think this would be a wonderful
star test for any of the high precision refractor on the market.

Delta Geminorum (Wasat)
Date & Time: 14 January 2001( 21:20 UT ) Seeing: 6 <1-10 Seeing Scale (10 best)> Location of site: Cheshire. UK 53° 15' N –2º 33' W Site classification: Suburban Sky darkness: 3-4 <Limiting magnitude> Conditions: Clear and cold with drifting high haze. Telescope: 200mm f/6 Newtonian scope mounted over a Vixen GP mount (manual slow motion). Any Quoted PA or SEP using Celestron micro guide (CMG ) Magnification: X60, X120 |
Observing this star using X60 I couldn't decide if I had
split the two or not.
Increasing the magnification to X120 I observed, in my opinion, a very fine classic double star with a bright primary and a faint close secondary. The colour of the primary seemed to be white with the secondary, estimated to be at PA 220, a delicate shade of orange. I think this is a very beautiful star to observe at this magnification.

At 158x, A and B components split easily revealing a pretty
yellow gem contrasting beautifully with its lovely bluish-white B component.

Got a nice split on this at 120x. The primary is a nice
Y, the secondary is to close and faint to tell. No attempt at a measurement
here.
Ambience: Saturday was clear and I thought, "At last, a chance for observing tonight." However, as the Sun went down, the clouds rolled in. On Sunday, the day did not live up to its name, however, as the Sun went down, the clouds left. So I managed to get it a session in the Heavenly Twins. It was cold but not freezing. A warm shirt and jacket to keep warm. I also use a pair of fingerless wool mitts - keep the fingers pretty warms but still allow agility for focusing, changing EPs, etc. No wind. Not much problem with nieghbor lights. The cat did pay me a short visit. I think that she had gone out after eating and was returning and wanted in. Finally I obiliged HRH the cat and opened the door. While observing delta, the dolly I had built for my ovserving stool
(actually a drummer's stool) broke as apparently I had under-engineered
it. No harm done to me and I completed the session mostly standing, as
the EP at this altitude is too high from the extra height of the platform.
Will have to re-design the dolly.

This striking pair is the brightest star that lies on
the most southerly line of stars in Gemini. Many list the companion star
as Purplish, that is between Red and Violet.
Comments: I was surprised in just splitting this star at X72 and only X144 showed the separation clearly. I suspect it is closer than the listed 6.3" separation. I found the colours Deep Yellow and Bluish in these skies. A stunning pair. |

At 263x I saw a bright pale cream primary star and a dim, dazzled,
near orange secondary. Using MG at 263x from an average of 11 measurements
I could determine the separation to be 5"8 with the PA estimated to be
220º.
