Star: Kappa Bootis
Date & Time: May 08 2001
Seeing: 6 <1-10 Seeing Scale (10 best)>.
Location of site: Annen, The Netherlands
(53ºN, 6ºE)
Site classification: Village backyard
Sky darkness: 3.5 (UMI) <Limiting magnitude>
Sky : Twilight and clouds coming in
Telescope: Swarovski AT80 (80mm spottingscope), Meade LX10 (8" f/10 SCT)
Magnification: 20x, 40x, 50x
Harschaw's Scale: 1 (AT80), 2 (LX10) <1 to 5>
With the spottingscope at 20x (and up to 40x) Iota and Kappa are in the same  FOV (together with a lot of other stars). This makes a wonderful view. Both doubles are  easily split at 20x, Kappa gives the best view, it's close and bright. Kappa gets a rating  1. for AT80 due to the beauty of the entire field, in which Kappa is the jewel. With LX10 at  50x Kappa also provides a very nice picture.

Easy split at 26mm (~60x) with a blueish white primary and colourless
companion, the PA of Iota and Kappa are nearly opposite.

Location of site: Apple Valley MN, USA

Sky darkness: 4 <Limiting magnitude>
Transparency: 8 (1-10)
Telescope: 12.5" f/5 Dobsonian
Magnification: 50x, 106x
I thought this was the most interesting one of the night. The primary looked blue-green to me, with a sort of reddish bronze secondary. Had to have been some playing off of the colors against each other, but it was a nifty pair. 50x, 106x.

Star:Kappa Bootis
Date & Time: 23-May-2001 (22:00 UT).
Seeing: 6/7 <1-10 Seeing Scale (10 best)>.
Location of site: Cheshire. UK
53° 15' N -2º 33' W
Site classification: Suburban
Conditions: High drifting haze with good clear patches.
Sky darkness: 3.0 (UMi) <Limiting magnitude>
Telescope: 200mm f/6  Newtonian mounted
over a Vixen GP mount (manual slow motion).
Eyepiece(s): 18mm orthoscopic, 6mm UO orthoscopic.
Magnification: X67, X200

Using X 67 I got separation for this double which gave a superb view at this magnification. The primary appeared to be a white colour with a blue white companion. Increasing the magnification up to X200 the colours became pale with the primary a white with a slight yellow colouration and the companion seemed to be a pale purplish colour. At X 200mag the view was superb. With the double centred in the eyepiece it seemed to be alone in the darkness.

Ambience: After the trials and tribulations of the day I find it very relaxing to get out under the stars for a few hours.
The sky looked very promising with very clear periods of still air along with some annoying high drifting hazy though. The tiny bats were swerving about all over the place catching insects. The stray cat showed up but made a very hasty exit when some fox cubs came tumbling into the garden to see what was going on.
