Star: Struve 179
         01 h 53 m 10.73 s + 37º 19' 16.7"
        magnitudes:   7.47  (F5),   8.09        (Guide 6.0.)
        WDS 1991:  3"5 / 160º

Observations: Using a magnification of 133x a beautiful pair of stars was observed. The primary star seemed be a yellow colour with the fainter companion having a white colour. Using the MicroGuide at 263x I measured the secondary star to be at PA of 159º6 with separation of 3"8 (an average of 7 measurements).

Sky conditions
seeing--  8 out of 10 (at times, approaching 9)
transparency-- 7 out of 10 (high, thin and spotty clouds, taking perhaps 1magnitude from the starlight)
limiting visual magnitude-- 4.0 mag
Telescope: Celestron C-8
Eyepiece: 20mm, 104x

Year of first measurement:  1822, 7.9 / 193
Year of last measurement:  1992
Distance (light years):  420
Luminosity (in suns):  129
Eyepiece and magnification:  20mm, 104x

Colors noted:  bW and W.  (Webb saw them as W and bW.)
A stunning pair, earning a 1st place rating in my "scale".
There is also a very rich but faint field to the southeast.
Both stars are spectroscopic binaries.

Location of site: Flat Iron observing site
Date of observations (UT): Nov 18(19)th, 2000
from 2:00 to 9:30
Site classification: Rural
Seeing: 7 <1-10 Seeing Scale (10 best)>
Sky darkness: 6.2 <Limiting magnitude>
Telescope: 90mm Meade ETX on
an AltAz mount.
Eyepiece(s): 32mm Meade Super Plossl,
15mm & 10mm Vixen Lantanum, 2x shorty barlow.
Magnification(s): 39x, 83x, 125x, 166x, 250x

39x in a nice field.  Obviously split.  Comp appears slightly fainter. For a change, the primary appears blue, and the comp. seems yellowish.  At 125x, the AP was est. at 195°

I finally found this by hopping over from M31 complex. At 32x was only elongated, at 48x easy split. Both stars appeared to be blue. Separation 9.5”, PA 192d. Rating: 3.

Found on the other side of nu from the M31 complex, at an angle of about 120d to the beta-mu-nu line. At 32x, elongated, maybe notched, cleanly split at 48x. Both were B. Separation measured at 9.6”, PA 194d.

Rating: 3
