980 ft above Mean Sea Level
Date of observations (UT): 03:30, Oct 17, 2000
Site classification: suburban
Sky conditions
seeing-- 8 out of 10
transparency-- 7 out of 10
limiting visual magnitude-- 4.5 mag
Telescope: Celestron C-8
Eyepiece: 20mm Erfle (104x)

Sep/PA's:  25 + / 3 +
Year of last measurement:  1982
Distance (light years):  322
Luminosity (in suns):  19
Eyepiece and magnification:  20mm Erfle (104x)
Colors noted:  Y and B (bordering on dB).

This pair lies in a very nice field, including a 7.4m star about
10' south (SAO 53660).

I'd rate the pair 3 out of 5, but Hipparchos/Tycho data show different distances for these stars; they may be an optical system.

39x-Nada.  166x the comp showed up and could be seen directly, but much better with averted. No colors and an obviously unequal pair.  (forgot the PA est...).

Ambience...other than us thin-skinned Arizonans' teeth chattering, there is little to report except for a wonderfully quiet night with the occasional car noises on a lonely desert road about 1.5 miles in the west.  However, gunshots were noted at 10pm as someone stopped and took target practice at a sign of some sort on the road.  I don't think that there's a sign on that road that isn't riddled with bullet holes. (And no, I'm not kidding about the gunshots or the signs...I'd be happy to
provide some pictures sometime.)

The soft (harsh after dark adaptation kicks in...) glow of Phoenix is hid somewhat behind the White Tank mountains to the east, but Orion still needs to be near the meridian to be at perfection.

As with the Otto Struve 514 At 142x, the secondary star was much fainter than the primary. Again the primary appeared very pale yellowish-white with the secondary a bluish whitish hue to my eye.
